Kelimutu. The Three Lakes of Changing Colours

As I approached the Kelimutu Crater Lakes, the smell of sulphur and drifting smoke felt like a giant kitchen hidden beneath the earth. I imagined a God quietly cooking three melting pots, using minerals and heat as ingredients to colour each lake. From afar the lakes looked simple, but standing closer I began to see more shades than I expected, shifting gently with light and wind. Moments like this make me wonder if nature’s colours are more than beauty, perhaps they carry stories we have yet to understand, waiting for those who travel into the rare.
