Yakushima National park

I have a deep appreciation for ancient trees, and Yakushima is home to one of Japan’s oldest, Jomonsugi is estimated to be between 2,000 and 7,200 years old. Although seeing this incredible tree requires a demanding 10 hour round trip hike, we chose not to make the journey. Instead, our hikes in Shiratani Unsuikyo and Yakusugi Land were truly amazing. As we wandered through the cedar forest, we came across a large, moss covered rock that reminded me of a scene from Princess Mononoke. The air in the forest was refreshingly aromatic, making this one of the most relaxing hikes I’ve ever had.
