Toraja. Where Death Becomes a Journey
The Toraja funeral in Sulawesi left me in complete awe. Families may keep the body of the deceased in the house for months or even years until everyone gathers and prepares for the ceremony, often discussed in the ancestral Tongkonan house. When the funeral finally begins, buffalo and pigs are sacrificed, and relatives arrive from everywhere bringing animals as offerings, a remarkable gathering between the living and the dead. The scale of the ceremony can cost hundreds of millions of rupiah, showing how deeply Toraja people honour the journey after death. Watching this made me wonder: if death is not the end but the beginning of another journey, where does the soul travel next?
